Welcome to the Homosexuality Section
Pure Intimacy is a ministry devoted to sexual healing and wholeness, to the transformed life of an individual. Recovery and redemption are the twin themes of this hope. The numbers of people asking Pure Intimacy for resources on same-gender attraction is growing. The needs are real; the wounds are painful. These individuals have often lived tragic lives of abuse, shame, and more rejection than most people can imagine. In addition to suffering from a world that often despises their behaviors, these persons also perceive that the world despises them personally. There is no lonelier place than living in a world that rejects a person for even existing.Sadly, two primary (and seemingly opposite) forces have tainted most peoples’ understanding of this issue.
Gaining prominence in the last decade, the pro-homosexual activist movement has proven very influential in media, entertainment, business, political, and academic circles. This movement insists that people are born gay, that they deserve protected class status and special benefits, and that “homophobia” is the greatest human persecution since the Holocaust. In the last couple years, these forces have gone to great lengths to dismantle the political and cultural institutions that would oppose them.
Those that would oppose them are often seen only as offering judgment and condemnation. They are sometimes seen shaking the Bible as they shout epithets at the homosexual. Verbal assaults and intimidation are their weapons of choice. This is the image that too many people see when they think of the Christian response to homosexual activism. This is more perceived than real, however. If anything, churches are more likely to be ambivalent about the homosexual than openly hateful.
Given a choice between the two, many Americans tend to lean toward the side of those offering acceptance and a warm embrace. But, in reality, these two extreme and seemingly opposite forces are not so distinct after all. The truth is they both hate the person.
Perhaps this is easier to see in the hate-spewing “Christian.” This is the person who speaks of God’s judgment but neglects to hold out God’s mercy and love and deep desire to know every one of His creatures. But is it not also hate to deny a person struggling with same-sex attraction counseling and treatment for an unwanted condition? Is there any charity in loudly denouncing—and sometimes threatening with bodily injury—those organizations and individuals who have either left homosexuality or offer help in doing so?
Lost between these two extremes is the authentic Christian approach to same-gender attraction. This is the view that values every single person, no matter who they are or what they’ve done—or not done. Those advocating this approach understand that every human has been marred by sin and do not measure specific sins or specific types of brokenness against others. This Christian response mirrors Jesus Christ himself who said “Come to me all who are thirsty…” The living water that Jesus offers is the redemption of the totality of our lives, the power to transform us from whatever abuse, sickness, hate, or loneliness has wounded us.
As you read through the articles posted here, look for this genuine embrace of all who are wounded. You will not see a glossing over of the harm of homosexual behavior, for to withhold information on God’s glorious design for our lives would be to withhold His love. Neither will you find, however, that cruel judgment you may have formerly associated with Christians.
This ministry welcomes all who struggle with sexual brokenness, be it addiction, same-gender attraction, infidelity, or pornography use. Our goal is always the same: to offer healing to the wounded and to help those who are seeking to discover what it means to be a human—a man or woman—created in the image and likeness of God.
